Achievements
Septic Systems
1989 Conduct a survey of the septic systems on the lake in co-operation with FAPEL. The results of the survey showed many substandard septic systems that were polluting the lake. The survey and classification of septic systems was presented to the council and they were encouraged to develop a plan to improve the situation.
Water Testing
1990 Conduct an extensive water quality survey in co-operation with FAPEL. This identified problem areas and created a baseline for measuring change in the water quality.
Conduct water quality tests on a stream polluted by human waste and assist a resident in presenting their problem to council.
Environment
Conduct a study of the area surrounding the lake identifying streams, wetlands, marshes and other features which are significant in the maintenance of the environment and ecological balance of the lake.
Advise and participate in the clean-up of an oil spill on one of the properties on the lake.
Provide advice to residents planning to build or change their home or property.
By-laws
Regulation of boat access to the lake. We requested that the council regulate boat access to the lake by chaining the boat ramps, monitoring access and cleaning boats before they enter the lake. This has reduced the likelihood of our lake being polluted by organisms from other lakes and waterways and has reduced boat traffic on the lake.
Recognition of streams entering the lake. Our study of the area around the lake was used to identify streams entering the lake and recognise them in our bylaws.
Provide council with our views regarding the application of existing bylaws, the adoption or modification of bylaws and on issues concerning our members.
Public awareness
Handouts, mailings and information packages about environmental dos and don'ts, septic systems, bylaw revisions and water quality.
Public meetings on important issues.
