* Due to a mass exodus of Muslim people from Ambon and other islands in Maluku between January and September 1999 the percentages have no doubt changed with an increased number of Protestants. These Muslim refugees, at least 65,000, went primarily to Buton in South Sulawesi. There has also been an influx of Christians into Ambon, it is the first choice of destination for refugees fleeing conflict in other parts of Central Maluku, i.e. Seram, Buru and Sula islands.
N.B. when interpreting population figures by religion please note:
Any person not claiming to belong to one of the 5 recognized religions (Muslim, Protestant, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist) is classified as Muslim. This inflates the actual Muslim population in many areas with an indigenous population that has not been assimilated, i.e. Seram, Tanimbar and Buru.
